Nelson Mandela in Brixton

Nelson Mandela visited Brixton on 12th July 1996 at his personal request. Were you there? We'd love to hear your personal story.

The streets were alive with thousands of people to welcome him and the Rec hosted a concert with local choirs and performers.

BRUG, together with Brixton Blog & Bugle and Urban 75, are preparing a tribute to this visit. Were you there? Or do you know anyone who was?

Share your memories or any photos you may have via:

Notice Board

I am just off to paste this notice on the BRUG notice board and then have a swim.

The photograph was taken at around 7 am. February 2013. It was really packed that day but, I had told the photographer to avoid people, so that is why it looks so quiet!

Our BRUG Survey is going well

The Brixton Recreation Centre User Group has been collecting views on The Brixton Rec to help us improve the facilities for everyone.

Here are the results of our survey Brug Survey 2013

We have been sitting inside the rec and getting adults and children to fill in our survey. We have had an amazing response. It seems people really love the place.

Some of the children have also drawn us lovely pictures of the things they like doing best.

If you want to fill in our survey, someone should be around at the following times:
Week starting April 8th. Mon: 6-8pm, Tues: 2-4pm, Wed. 6-8pm, Thurs. 4-6pm.
Or you can fill the survey out online at http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/XRVRXXR if you haven't already filled out the hard copy one.
We'd really appreciate if everyone could take just a few minutes to fill out the short survey.
Many thanks!

What do you think of the Brixton Recreation Centre?

We need your help...

...to help us improve the facilities at the Brixton Rec for everyone, we'd like to find out more about how you use the Rec. So, we'd really appreciate if everyone could take just a few minutes to fill out this short survey. Many thanks!

All user meeting – a date for your diary

To have your say, join us at the BRUG meeting on Wednesday 27th May, 6-8pm in the Rec Conference Suite, Level 5.

Lambeth council especially wants to encourage groups of people who would
particularly benefit from being more physically active.

Here's what BRUG thinks:

High Pay-As-You-Go prices for classes and facilities will put people off.
Disability access is a big factor for other people.
These voices should be heard and have an influence
as the Rec is being refurbished.

Here are some things people have said to us before:

"It costs too much - £6.20 for me and my two year old
grandchild to have a swim."
"Me? Do dance classes?!"
"My GP referred me - I would never have gone otherwise."
"I'm overweight. I'd be too embarrassed.
I'd come with a friend"
"I can't swim properly."
"Gyms are for fit people"

Please contact Robyn Dasey, BRUG Secretary, via email recusergroup@btinternet.com

Improving the Brixton Rec for everyone

BRUG is actively pursuing Councillor Lib Peck’s commitment, made on behalf of the Council, to improve the facilities at the Brixton Rec and not demolish it.

This is our chance to push what Brixton Rec users want.

The main and most immediate issues that BRUG is raising with the Council and GLL/Better, who run the Rec, include:
  • Making the ramp more welcoming
  • Making the outside of the Rec more contemporary looking, informative and interesting with, for example, displays, flags and artwork
  • Installing display boards inside
  • Seeking disabled people’s views on their needs at the Rec
  • Using planters in the internal atrium
  • Celebrating and marketing the Rec more in the community
For the longer term, BRUG would like the Council and GLL/Better to consider:
  • Introducing new activities (eg, boxing)
  • Conducting a high standard energy audit
  • Opening up the rooms on front entrance level/balcony (eg, a cafĂ©)
  • Introducing a Lambeth sports development programme for 12 to 16 year olds
We want and need all Brixton Rec users to participate in helping to build better facilities and services at the Centre. Would you like to work with us on any of the above or other issues relating to improving the Rec? If so, email brixtonbrug@gmail.com with your ideas.
